Ogawa Kinnosuke was born in 1884 in Aichi prefecture. He began kendo whilst in
school, at around 13/15 years of age, under kendo hanshi Kato Kiichi and later
under Kohori Yasutada. He was a student and later an instructor at the Budo
Senmon Gakko, as well as in the Nagoya police. He was a Butokukai hanshi and was
Busen's principle kendo instructor in the 1930's and up until 1945. He
authored "Teikoku Kendo Kyohon" (The Kendo Textbook of Imperial Japan)
in 1932 (revised 1937) and was posthumously inducted into the Kendo Hall of Fame
in 2003.

Well-documented student of Naito Takaharu at Budo Senmon Gakko from 1907-1910,
as described in detailed historical accounts including Kenshi 24/7 article
“In 1905 a school was formally opened to teach kendo instructors and Naito was
selected as the senior teacher. At this time the school was known as the Bujutsu
Kyoin Yoseijo, but eventually (after a few re-organisations and renames) it
would be known to everyone as Busen (Budo Senmon Gakko). It was to this school
that Ogawa was dispatched by the Nagoya police department in 1907. Ogawa would
spend 3 years studying kendo directly under Naito.”

recipients, all students of Naito Takaharu and Bujutsu Kyoin Yoseijo graduates

Website biography describes training under Ogawa at Busen
“At the Busen Abbe received instruction from Ogawa Hanshi (genius), the
Butokukai Judan (10th Dan) sword master. While at the Busen Kenshiro also
enrolled in Mr. Gen Tanabe's philosophy class, at the Kyoto Teikoku
University. That early encounter with philosophy would be influential in the
formation of his system. While the training was arduous at the Busen, Kenshiro
managed to receive his Yondan (4th Dan) rank in Judo, being again the young
Judoka to attain it. His sister, Toyoka, decided to take Martial Arts too,
enrolling in Mrs. Mitamura's Naginata class. She would dedicate the rest of
her life to the practice of the art.”
