Description
Peruvian-born pioneer of judo in Spain. He discovered judo in Lima in 1931,
trained under Japanese teachers (Shinsho Siosaki Murayama, Makishima) in Peru,
and arrived in Spain in 1947, giving the first judo classes in Madrid at the
Gimnasio Juventud on Calle Fuencarral. He co-founded the first Spanish judo
club, the Asociación Española de Judo y Jiu-jitsu (May 1950), later the Club
Bushidokwai, and served as unofficial technical adviser of the Spanish Judo
Department until Yves Klein's arrival in 1954. He published the Método de
Judo del Gimnasio Bushidokwai and was awarded the Medalla de Oro al Mérito
Deportivo in 1972.

San Bartolomé's own words, quoted on the Judo en Familia biography, describe
discovering judo in a cafetín in Lima in 1931 and being introduced to Shinsho
Siosaki Murayama as his first teacher; the page independently calls Murayama
'pionero del judo en el Perú'. The page's narrative calls Murayama
3rd dan of the Kodokan while the quoted anecdote calls him 2nd dan, but the
relationship itself is not in doubt.
"Su primer profesor fue el japonés Shinsho Siosaki Murayama (Shinzo
Murayama), 3° dan del Kodokan, pionero del judo en el Perú..."

The Judo en Familia biography records that Makishima (4th dan) was San
Bartolomé's exam sponsor for the 1st dan in 1936 and his teacher for the 2nd
dan in 1940. The page spells the name inconsistently ('Makishinia' /
'Makíshíma') and it is a secondary source, so confidence is probable
rather than confirmed.
"En el año 1940 obtiene su 2º dan, siendo su profesor el maestro Makíshíma,
y sus padrinos de examen los maestros Kugo Sato (8° Dan) y Sumiyiki Kotani (9°
Dan)..."

The Judo en Familia biography records the 1st dan in 1936 with Makishima (4th
dan) as exam sponsor (padrino de examen); a Kodokan dan grade conferred by the
Japanese teachers and Kodokan delegates active in Peru. Secondary source, so
probable.

Makishinia 4º Dan obtuvo el 1º dan."

The Judo en Familia biography gives the 2nd dan in 1940 (teacher Makishima; exam
sponsors Kugo Sato 8th dan and Sumiyuki Kotani 9th dan, Kodokan delegates in
South America) but itself casts doubt on the grade, noting that comparison with
other judoka arriving from abroad 'ofrecía algunas dudas sobre tal

The Judo en Familia biography says the 3rd dan was granted by Yves Klein (4th
dan, Kodokan delegate for Spain) with Ichiro Abe (7th dan, Kodokan delegate for
Europe) as sponsor; Klein conferred it in Kodokan's name, so the grade is
recorded as a Kodokan dan. The Sueños de Olimpia blog instead credits the grant
to Ichiro Abe. The dedicated biography is followed for the granter, with the
conflicting account flagged.
"En el 1954 Alfredo San Bartolomé obtiene su 3º dan del profesor Ivés Klein
(4º dan y delegado del Kodokan para España), su padrino fue Ichiro Abe (7º dan,
delegado del Kodokan para Europa)."

The Sueños de Olimpia blog records that San Bartolomé failed the first 5th dan
exam in Spain (November 1969, Gimnasio Moscardó) and that the Federación
Española promoted him in 1973; the Judo en Familia biography confirms the
Federation promotion without a year.

Fernando Franco trained under Alfredo San Bartolomé at the Gimnasio Juventud and
later at the Bushidokwai in Madrid, from 1948 until the dissolution of their
partnership in late 1957. San Bartolomé was his primary judo instructor during
the formative years of Spanish judo.
"Fernando Franco de Sarabia forma parte, desde 1948, de este núcleo
fundador del judo madrileño en el que pronto empiezan a manifestarse las
diferencias de criterio que llevan a la disolución de la sociedad a principios

Alfredo San Bartolomé en la dirección técnica; desligándose Antonio
