Baidu Baike states Lee Hoi-chuen apprenticed under the Cantonese opera performer Xiaosheng Yi (小生奕) from 1911, who gave him his stage name and taught him both opera performance and martial arts.

The evidence favours the claim and nothing credible contradicts it, but it falls short of establishing it.
