Geesink calls Asami an 8th dan in his own 1961 article; corroborated by the contemporary Kodokan Review (Asami Sempei), but the exact grade and date rest on a single primary source.
The evidence favours the claim and nothing credible contradicts it, but it falls short of establishing it.
