    Description

Bloemendaal dentist and pioneer of judo in the Netherlands, affectionately known as "opa" Schutte. Came to judo at the age of 46 shortly after the Second World War under the judo pioneer Jaap Nauwelaerts de Agé. Founded the Kenamju judo school in Haarlem in 1948 and the Nederlandse Amateur Judo Associatie (NAJA) in 1950, which later merged into the Judo Bond Nederland. His student Jon Bluming received his 1st dan from Schutte after only 12 months of training at the Tung Jen club in Amsterdam; he also introduced Felix De Smedt to Tokio Hirano, and De Smedt's shodan was awarded by Schutte in September 1952. Remained active in judo into old age.

Bluming's official biography states that Opa Schutte was a 4th dan, received from Tokio Hirano, at the time Bluming trained under him in the 1950s. Single primary source; no date recorded.
The evidence favours the claim and nothing credible contradicts it, but it falls short of establishing it.

“Back in Holland he found by accident the judo club witch would really change his life from that on. When he brought home his girlfriend he saw in a little street a poster of the Tung Jen judo club in November 1953. So he went to that dojo and joined up. [...] his Sensei, Dr G. Schutte gave him his 1st Dan only after 12 months”
