    id_card

    Description

Challenge match in a pavilion on the Avenida Central, in which the capoeira Ciríaco da Silva beat the ju-jitsu champion Sada Miyako. The most likely account has him win with a rabo de arraia to the head; another has him first throw sand in his opponent's eyes.

“One famous fight took place in Rio, in 1909, where a Japanese champion, Sada Miako, was teaching ju-jitsu. Ciríaco da Silva, a black docker from the interior town of Campos, took up the challenge. The match was carried out before a considerable audience in a pavilion especially mounted for that occasion on the Avenida Central.”
