Okinawan karate master who developed Shuri-te, a precursor to many modern karate styles. Teacher of Ankō Asato, Ankō Itosu, and through them influenced Gichin Funakoshi and modern karate. Born in the Ryukyu Kingdom, died after Okinawa's annexation by Japan.
