Also known as
Nippon Shorinji Kempo
Description
Japanese martial art founded in 1947 by So Doshin (Nakano Michiomi), combining
strikes, joint locks, throws and pressure points with Zen Buddhist practice. It
claims the legacy of the Shaolin Temple; a 1972 court ruling made it change its
name to Nippon Shorinji Kempo, and Draeger saw Hakko-ryu jujutsu in its
techniques.
Sources
“This claim on the Shaolin heritage was one of a number of attempts by the
organization to establish a connection that had been brought into question in
1972, when the courts in Japan disproved many of the assertions of Chinese
origins, legally requiring So to change the name of the budo to Nippon Shorinji
Kempo (Japanese Fist Way of the Shaolin Temple).”
