    Also known as

    Hans Niedel · Hans Mendel

    Description

Fifteenth-century German fencing master of the Liechtenauer tradition from Salzburg. A long sword gloss attached to his name, probably written by a student or associate, revises Sigmund ain Ringeck's gloss and cites teachings of Hans Seydenfaden von Erfurt; Paulus Hector Mair acquired it in 1539.

His gloss cites Seydenfaden's teachings; Wiktenauer says only that he may have traced his lineage through him, or may have had a lost treatise of his.
Some evidence points to the claim, but it is thin, indirect, or in unresolved conflict with other evidence.

His gloss cites Seydenfaden's teachings; Wiktenauer says only that he may have traced his lineage through him, or may have had a lost treatise of his.
“He may have traced his lineage through Hans Seydenfaden von Erfurt, a member of the Fellowship of Liechtenauer, as Medel's text is the only known source that mentions teachings from the earlier master.”

“This may indicate that Hans Medel possessed a treatise by Seydenfaden that is now lost, or even that he was a direct student of Seydenfaden himself.”

The gloss under his name comments on Liechtenauer's Recital, but Wiktenauer thinks a student or associate wrote it.
The evidence favours the claim and nothing credible contradicts it, but it falls short of establishing it.

“Medel's name is attached to a manuscript fencing treatise from the late 15th or early 16th century, including an incomplete gloss of Liechtenauer's Recital on the long sword and an addendum on fencing based on "the Seven Stances"; it seems to have been written by a student or associate of Medel rather than the master himself.”

Two Wiktenauer pages say the gloss under his name quotes and revises Ringeck's; same publisher, and the gloss may be a student's work.

“This gloss is unique in the Liechtenauer tradition in that it not only offers unique commentary on the Recital, but also both quotes and occasionally criticizes or corrects the earlier glosses of Sigmund ain Ringeck and Nicolaüs.”

“but his text primarily takes the form of a revision and expansion of Ain ringeck's long sword gloss.”
