Description

Private kenjutsu dojo in Mito, Ibaraki, opened 1874-01-01 by Kozawa Torakichi in his own residence after the abolition of the Mito domain. Taught Hokushin Ittō-ryū kenjutsu and Shin Tamiya-ryū battojutsu; Naitō Takaharu and Monna Tadashi trained there before going on to the Keishichō and the Butokukai. One of the three great private dojos of Japan (kenshi247); private ownership has continued in the Kozawa family, and the dojo still practises kendo, iaido, naginata, Hokushin Ittō-ryū, and Shin Tamiya-ryū (JA wiki, Mito Tobukan).

JA wiki (Naitō Takaharu): entered Kozawa's Tobukan at 12, kirigami at 14, mokuroku at 18; Tobukan's own 1874-01-01 founding fixes the at-12 entry year at 1874. End 1883: his April 1883 departure for Tokyo.
The evidence establishes the claim: it is sufficient and consistent, and any conflicting evidence is resolved.

  • Monna Tadashi

    Probable
JA wiki (Monna Tadashi, citing Domoto Akihiko's Meiji Gekken-ka) attributes the Shin Tamiya-ryū battojutsu at Tobukan specifically to Kozawa Ichirō, Torakichi's eldest son; kenshi247 attributes both Tobukan arts to Torakichi - the more specific claim is modeled and the conflict recorded.
The evidence favours the claim and nothing credible contradicts it, but it falls short of establishing it.
